The High Cost Of Eating Sugar

The holidays are just around the corner, bringing with them an abundance of tempting treats. Perhaps your plan is to indulge now and hit the gym later. But that may not be enough.

Experts claim that reducing sugar intake is the real key to weight
loss, not exercise.

Over the last 30 years, exercise statistics stayed about the same, while obesity rose significantly. We often hear that our
sedentary lifestyle is the culprit, but highly processed sugary foods and sodas continue to be a mainstay in our diet.

This doesn’t mean that you should cancel your gym membership. We
know that exercise has far-reaching benefits, but what you eat certainly matters. What’s more, the cost of eating sugar goes beyond losing weight.

A diet high in sugar, regardless of your fitness level, can wreak havoc on your overall health.

One recent study in the journal Obesity argues that sugar is harmful because of what it is, not because of its calories or effects on weight. While sugar consumption does promote fat storage and hunger, which leads to weight gain, it is also metabolically harmful. Even those of us with a normal body mass index can harbor metabolic abnormalities associated with obesity if we eat poorly. This can lead to chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

This makes reducing sugar an important step to a healthy lifestyle.

This holiday, be aware of what you’re eating. If you know you have a party to attend, plan sensible meals around it. If you want to bake, give away more than you keep. By watching your sugar intake you will be on the way to a healthy weight – and a healthy body.
